The joy of forfeits | Wellcome Collection blog

I wrote a short piece about the place games evenings had in Victorian society for the Wellcome Collection blog – I’m also making a new game for them for this Friday’s Late Wrong! A carnival of human error.

It turns out that once you’ve done the research (and I spent a happy day in the British Library looking at 19th century games pamphlets), when you’re talking about parlour games and the Victorians you can’t avoid talking about kissing . It’s an interesting lens on a society we were taught is scandalised by a woman’s ankle, and feeds into a lot of thinking about play as a pressure valve for society.
