It’s one of those great Civ moments where the metaphors of game design come together to offer a sly commentary on the way the world really works, where a mechanic reminds you of something and you realise, oh yeah, this is us.

This is something I’ve been obsessing over in my current work – using mechanics to show how the world works, rather than cut scenes to tell. This is a glorious article, about a new design feature in a game I’ve spent many hundreds of hours on over the years.
